The discovery of oil in 1892 and completion of the aqueduct in 1913 spurred the sprawling growth that characterizes modern Los Angeles. Soon the sunny year-round weather and multiple filming locations attracted the nascent movie industry. Now second only to New York in size, L.A. is the capital of the "left coast" of the United States and the entertainment capital of the world! L.A. also has 10,000 foot mountain peaks, the Garment district for fashionistas, and the best museums of the West Coast. It is true that one needs a car to get around L.A., but fortunately, once in the car, there are many places to go! While San Francisco won't admit it, there are great reason to love "the city of angels".
Apart from the myriad attractions and distractions that a megacity like L.A. can offer, its location is convenient for visits to San Diego and Las Vegas. With even better weather than L.A., San Diego is perfect for outdoor living. Stroll in outdoor shopping centers, dine al fresco in the Gaslight District, visit the museums at Balboa Park and suntan at the beach. Las Vegas, on the other hand, beckons you inside lavish hotel casinos with air-conditioned comfort. Even those that don't gamble are charmed by Vegas's frontier bravura. Where else can you find modern-day copies of pirate coves, Egyptians pyramids, and Venice, the city of canals, all in the middle of the desert? And don't miss the Grand Canyon, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Sit on the rim and watch the colors change for hours as the sun rises overhead.
