Overview
Sonoma and Napa counties, located about forty miles north of San Francisco, are the home of California's premier wine growing regions. While Sonoma is the larger county, the Sonoma Valley is the smaller of the two valleys. The valley is often referred to as the "Valley of the Moon" from an old Indian legend immortalized in Jack London's short story of the same name.
While it can be argued that Sonoma has more history, Napa does have more wineries. With its broader and longer valley floor, Napa does have the terrain for easier planting and harvesting of vines.
In truth both valleys benefit from the unique geological and meteorological conditions of the north bay area that are perfectly suited to growing a vast variety of wine grapes. The benefit to us is obvious: an abundance of great wines.
